Nerf Gun Wall – Boys Preen Bedroom

My fifth little boy is ten years old. When we moved into this home I knew, from experience with raising older children, how quickly time flies. So when decorating his bedroom I decided to take all of the wisdom in decorating a preens bedroom. First of all Preston will be 12 in a blink of an eye. Something happens to boys between the ages of 12 and 13. They stop singing to themselves as they play with Lego’s, they stop playing with action figures, spaceships, and toys that make noise; they just grow up all too quickly.

Since Preston is a “preen” I didn’t want to make his bedroom too childish and I wanted his room to have the ability to grow up with him. I decided to theme his room outer space but not over do it. He loves Lego’s, Nerf Guns, Halo, Birds in Space, Robots, Star Wars, all those fun toys. So painting two of his walls a starlight blue was perfect and making bedding out of outer space fabrics tied in the theme. Bedding can be changed out very easily, and what teen boy doesn’t like blue? I knew the paint choice would grow with him.

The ceilings in his room are very high. I had some movie sized poster frames that used to hang in my Seattle home. I took these and nailed them at the top of the ceiling, painting them ivory, the same color as the trim. This brings the ceiling down a bit and I have left the frames open, they look like moulding at the top of the walls. I flanked both blue walls, leaving the other two walls the cream color of my entire home. This allowed brightness in the room so that his bedroom was not over saturated with dark paint. I left the frames open, allowing for him to quickly and easily change out whatever posters he wants as he grows older and into different stages in life. Right now I let him go on eBay and choose some of his favorite Halo Prints. I will show pictures of that project in a different post.

Today I am highlighting his Nerf gun wall display. I love this idea! I have seen Nerf displays made from peg board, but I wanted something high tech looking  Preston’s favorite toys are Nerf guns. Why not, then, actually have his toys more interactive by integrating them into his bedroom design?  They then can look organized and be played with easily. Especially since his collection is not small. I also love that this system I used can display anything. When he is done with Nerf guns he can put sports equipment on it, or whatever he chooses. The possibilities are endless.

I purchased three gridwall displays 2×6 feet, which you can find by clicking here: Econoco P3BLK26 Grid Panel, 2′ W x 6′ H, Black (Pack of 3).

They also have grid wall displays in 2×4 foot panels if you want a smaller display, which are found by clicking here: Econoco P3BLK24 Grid Panels, 2′ Width x 4′ Height, Black (Pack of 3).

To hang the nerf guns I used hardware found here: 4″ Gridwall Hooks For Grid Panel Display – 50 Pcs Box – 1/4″ Dia Wire – Standard Duty – Black Color.

To hang the grid walls in place I used these mounting brackets: Gridwall Mount Brackets For Grid or Slatgrid Panels Box of 18 Pcs Black Color.

I love using Amazon because the shipping is FREE with Prime and everything comes directly to my door. {See link below for a free trial for Amazon Prime}.

I bought the three wall display racks that are six feet tall. That was back in March.  And there they sat because I was afraid to hang them incorrectly. I knew I needed to find the studs to have them work correctly and hold weight. Finally, several months later, I decided to be brave and just do it. I really gained a lot of confidence in myself. I’ve started to become quite the handy-woman!

I used a screw driver, stud finder, and lazer level!
After I found the studs I place the metal slats where they would work in the space, still allowing each one to be supported by at least two areas into studs.

Here they are, hanging and secure. The hardware isn’t perfectly spaced, but will not be noticeable after I get the Nerf gun display up. Other than a little touch up paint it’s good to go!
I was able to hang his Nerf shirts and vests, plus bought a display for all of his baseball caps. You can find it here: Black Gridwall Hat Display.
There is a little wire basket which worked great to hold extra scopes, little guns, and ammo magazines! You can find that here: Econoco BSK13/B All Purpose Small Basket, 12″ W x 12″ D x 4″ H, Black (Pack of 6).
I hope you like his wall as much as he does. The first thing he asked to do after seeing the wall complete was to have a Nerf Halloween Party!
Here’s a fun sneak peek inside Preston’s bedroom when I filled it up with balloons for his birthday. The Nerf Gun Wall is to the left (not shown in photo) when walking in the bedroom. I purchased his loft bed from IKEA as well as the hanging “art” metal rails. Notice the framed picture in the far back, this is Preston’s favorite. I’ve always had problems with the hooks on the wall falling off with the nerf guns, do these hooks stay on pretty well ?
I haven’t used this type of wall board or hooks before

I love these hooks! They do stay in place and don’t fall off. You can interlock them for more stability right on the edge of the squares too. Thanks for asking:).

I absolutely love these hooks and this grid wall system. It is so sturdy and the hooks aren’t like those from the peg board system. They are easy to adjust but also keep the guns up nicely. Good luck!

Love this! Would they work placed horizontally as well? My son’s room has sloped ceilings so wall space is much shorter in one of the areas I would want to place a second or third rack.

Absolutely, they can be hung horizontally! I think it would look really nice in a room with sloped ceilings. Great use of space! Good luck!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. I am so excited to do my sons room for his birthday surprise! I was at a lost on what to do with all of his guns and accessories. I do have a question though – where did you purchase the nerf jacket ? I have looked everywhere for one like that and cannot find it (amazon included). My son feels like a million bucks when he wears his vest and I cannot imagine how he would fill in a jacket especially since it is starting to get cold out. Okay thank you so much!

Hello Jessica, You are welcome, I am so excited for your son. He will absolutely love this and will have the best room on the block! The nerf jacket was from Target. It is more like an adjustable vest that holds lots of ammo. The other items are shirts to wear with friends to separate onto teams. Best of luck! Happy Thanksgiving 🙂
