Get Ready, Get Set, Get Productive: 9 Reasons To Put Yourself First Every Morning

I drove three days straight from Dallas. It felt non stop even though we did stop. If only for a little shut eye before heading back on the road. We finally arrived in Reno, not just tired, but dead tired. I thought the weeks and months of sorting, eliminating, and packing was hard. But then there is this. This is reality. This is the ugly truth of us moving on our own with little to no help. This is D going straight to work the morning after we arrive. This is me, tired, sweaty, in the same yoga pants three days straight. This is me feeling disgusting. This is me a week later still feeling tired, sweaty, unkept, no time for myself, and overwhelmed.

Something had to change, and quick. So for the past few days I’ve been trying something new. I think I have always known this but I just didn’t make the mental connection as it being a necessary way of life for me. I have whole-heartedly determined that I am far more productive when I shower, get ready, put on full make up, wear a cute outfit AND put on cute shoes.

This certainly was not always the case. It has always made sense in my logical mind to get all sweaty and do the chores before I get ready. So 99 percent of the time that is what I have done. I’d stay in yoga pants and a tee. Then I will shower and get ready for the rest of the day. But what happens when you have so much to do AND the work is never ending? Then what?

Well, that is exactly where I am. The work is never done. Because of that fact the past week I found myself remaining in an ever state of anxiousness. Why? Because I haven’t gotten ready for the day and before I know it I am making dinner. After that, what is the point? I sit on the couch with hubby and veg in the evening and just feel GROSS, or even continue to work, because that is what I do best. Eventually I may shower at night, rinse, and repeat the following day. It is very depressing and it is no way to live. In fact, it felt like I was drowning.

When I get up, shower, and get ready first thing in the morning I have found that this happens:

I put me first. As a mom, running my own business, and now unpacking and setting up a new home, it is very hard to put myself first. I let everything else take precedence. However, when I take the time to put me first each morning I am telling myself that I am important and that I deserve to have that hour block of time just for me.

I feel better about myself. Confidence goes a long way. I probably feel the worst about myself when I am sweaty and stinky. Especially if someone comes to the door or I have to run a quick errand. I hate feeling that way.

I’m on my A game. When I am ready for the day I am ready to tackle the world. “Bring it on!”
I’ll answer the door. When the bell rings, which it will and at the most inconvenient times, instead of pretending I am not home I’ll go and answer it. Yesterday that saved me two trips. One to UPS and the other to USPS. Thank goodness for being presentable.

I can jump ship at a moments notice. Like today, when P text me he had a headache and to come pick him up from school. I didn’t have to hurry to change into something different or be embarrassed to check him out. All anxiety was alleviated because I was ready for anything.

Why the shoes? I’ve noticed that if I am wearing shoes I am less tempted to lay down and get into bed when I feel a wave of tiredness. Same with the couch. It makes a huge difference in my level of productivity. And if they are cute (but practical) shoes than all the better. I do love a cute shoe.

I eat healthier. Yes, that is correct. When I feel better about myself I tend to feel more motivated to get healthy. The opposite is true when scrounging around and feeling dumpy.

I’m ready for a work out. Yes, this too! I’m more liable to get out of the house and go for a nice long walk or hit the treadmill at the gym.

Putting ME first positively affects every aspect of my life. I have found that feeling good about myself by simply “getting ready” for the day has leaked into every facet of my life. I’m taking the time to read my scriptures again since the move. I’m kneeling down to pray more than once a day. I’m more cheerful. I just FEEL BETTER.

So here is to us women putting ourselves first! Get Set, Get Ready, Get Productive!

Such great insight! I’m sitting here on the couch in my stretchy black pants and a black tank top….thinking about everything I need to be doing. But instead I’m being lazy and reading your (newly discovered) blog!

But I think you’re right – getting ready for the day regardless of what is planned makes it all go much smoother. I need to make it a point to do this more often!

Jules, Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read a few of my thoughts. Everything seems to go a little better when I take care of me first. xo
