Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

img_3776

Frank Sinatra first sang “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, but I absolutely adore how Michael Buble has brought this old song new life. This year I started thinking about the words as I sang them. Usually I mindlessly sing Christmas carols, but this year I’ve really thought about the words and why they were written. Something clicked in my heart and in my mind as I pondered their meaning. This song, in particular, captured the essence of what I want to feel on Christmas Day.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight
Let your heart be light. Forgive those who have offended you, reach out to them, let your troubles and weary heart be washed away by the unconditional love of Christ.
From now on our troubles will be out of sight. Nothing says trouble more than debt. Give gifts with meaning instead of price tags. Feel the peace of reassurance on Christmas morning–knowing that you gave what you could afford, that it came from the heart, and that it was plenty.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the Yuletide gay
From now on, our troubles will be miles away
Make the Yuletide Gay. Make Christmastime a happy time. A time of reconnecting with dear family and friends.
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Happy golden days of yore. Won’t it be beautiful reflecting on wonderful Christmas’ past, friendships, and family when in our golden years?
Faithful friends who are dear to us, gather near to us, once more. I think of Christmas cards that come in the mail and we gather them together and display them inside our homes. Opening each one and seeing dear friends is a gift. Invite sweet friends and family over during the holiday season. Create memories with people who mean the most to you.
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
So hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Through the years we all will be together if the fates allow. Cherish loved ones, for you never know what the coming year will bring. Let love win this Christmas and always.
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough. Above all, the highest priority {the highest bough}, is to remember that Christ is the reason we are all brought together this season.
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas now. Notice it says a Merry Little Christmas. Not a huge, over-priced, over the top, more than you can afford, more than what should be done, leaving Christ out of it, Christmas.
As a matter of fact, not once is a gift other than the love of friendship and family ever mentioned. These connections with people are the priceless gifts that will never go out of style, never need to be replaced, and gifts that will last forever.
So, Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas now!
