Today while driving in the car and I looked over at Doug and said, “Why do I love you so much?” He replied, “I often wonder why you love me too”. A bit shocked, I gave him my are you kidding me look, and replied “Here’s the thing, I could turn around and leave any minute. But I choose you. Every day, every hour, and every second you are my choice. I am the lucky one.”
Each and every day we all have choices. We can choose to be with who we want, we choose our jobs, where we live, and we even get to choose what we are doing at this very moment.
So if we have all of these choices why do we often find that we have chosen our way into doing what we don’t want to do with our time? Why do we end up in places or with people we would rather not be? How can we get so far down the wrong path before we realize “I am miserable”? Why does it often seem that it is impossible to do the things that will ultimately get us to where we want to be? Why do other people seem to be the lucky ones?
The truth is that we can all be the lucky ones.
If we want joy, if we want happy, if we want love and if we want quality of life, then it doesn’t really have to be that hard to get. We simply just have to start choosing it. Spending time each and every day making even the tiniest move towards happiness will pay off. It may take a while, but happy will eventually come back to us. It is kind of amazing how it works.
Life is an echo. What you send out, comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get. ~Unknown
I have seen sorrow and I have had regrets. I have had sadness and depression overcome me with such intensity that I felt I could not go on. I have had hundreds of thousands in the bank and I have had only pennies. I have been on top of the world and I have been down and out. Over the course of forty years my perspective has widened to see angles that were once unnoticeable. In the far corners were glimpses of a beautiful life. A life where instead of following the crowd I made my own path. A path that was simple to go down because innately it was already paved. A path that I only needed courage to begin to follow.
Maybe the journey isn’t about becoming anything, maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were in the first place. ~Unknown
Many people have chosen a different path than desired because of money. However, having an over-abundance of money doesn’t really matter. It is a currency that cannot leave this earthly existence. Sure, we need enough to get by, but how much life will be sacrificed to have an over-abundance of it? Is happiness worth the exchange for a lofty number only seen on the screen of an online bank account?
I can make all the money in the world, but what I can never get back is the time that I have spent making it. ~Douglas Coover
By removing money out of the equation for happiness, the question then becomes, what am I going to do with my time? Well, for me it is easy. I choose happy. I choose to do what brings positivity and light into my life. I choose to spend my time with people I love. I choose to earn a living by doing what I enjoy. I choose to exercise in ways that are fun and entertaining. I choose to eat healthy food that tastes delicious. I choose to surround myself with intelligent people who challenge and broaden my ways of thinking.
This is why when I am driving down the road with Doug my heart swells with joy as I look over and ask “Why do I love you so much?” It is because every day, every hour, and every second, I am finally choosing happy. You see, I am the lucky one.
